Steve Howes Councillor for Ward 2 County of Brant

Steve Howes Councillor for Ward 2 County of Brant

About Steve

Bio and Work Experience

I’ve lived in Paris my whole life, and raised my family here at the corner of Silver & Gold in the Junction area of Paris in the County of Brant. We are now at the empty nest stage of life.

From Steve: Wishing a Happy 84th Birthday to my Dad today! I’m always happy to be able to celebrate my Dad’s big day and after some shingles related health issues a few months ago, I’m especially grateful that he has bounced back and is looking great! And, of course, Dad has always been one of my biggest supporters and he wears his Vote Howes button with pride as he cruises around Paris every day. Happy Birthday Dad, I love you and will see you soon! ❤️🎂

When I was 12, my first summer job was with the Town of Paris as Lifeguard in Training at the Paris Pool, helping kids learn to swim and helping to clean and maintain the facility.

As a teenager, I spent 6 years working in the local grocery store, and during the later part of high school and college, I worked as a photographer for the local newspaper. The one thing these formative jobs had in common is that they all gave me the opportunity to get to know the people in our community. After going to college for Business, I moved into an apartment in Downtown Paris and went to work in Marketing and International Sales for Paris Playground Equipment Inc. This role provided me with opportunities to work with businesses all around the world who distributed our products to their local municipalities. The company has undergone a number of changes over the years. Today, the company is called PlayPower Canada, and in my current position in Playground Design and Sales, I work with municipalities all over Ontario.

Local politics has long been an ambition of mine, so in 2018 I ran in the municipal election to represent Ward 2 for the County of Brant and was successful.

I have learned a lot in the in my role as Councillor and hope to continue with re-election this October. As I learned about the inner workings of our municipality, I have shared that information in many detailed posts on my Councillor Facebook page (many have been posted on this website too!). I would appreciate it if you take the time to read them.

April Lee of Little Paris Bread Company says: My friend Steve Howes stopped by! He’s one of our original customers that started when our bakery was literally an old janitor’s closet. He is an all around delightful person and is running for another term as Ward 2 Councillor!

From Steve: Today’s Campaign Button sighting came with a free sample of THE BEST local tomatoes! Jason Cooper and I have known each other since high school and nestled in the beautiful scenery of Blue Lake Road, Coop has a wonderful produce stand…definitely worth checking out. Thanks for your support Coop and tonight will be Bruschetta Night at our house! 😊 🍅
From Chris Whelan of The Paris Independent: Paris is so fortunate to have such amazing and dedicated members of our council and they deserve credit where credit is due! One of the best choices on the ballot this year is the option to re-elect Steve Howes! Steve is a long-time Parisian and although he isn’t running in my ward I wholeheartedly endorse him! Steve is the perfect balance of someone that has grown up in Paris and cares about everything we do as well as someone that puts in the time and effort to really understand the current issues and the need for balance. The fact that Steve is enthusiastically seeking re-election is a blessing for all of us because he represents not just ward 2 but all of Paris. He is always available to answer questions and he gets real answers and he takes real action. Ward 2 has an exciting opportunity to gain a new council member and also re-elect Steve Howes! What a perfect balance. 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 From Steve: I am honoured to share this Campaign Button sighting and endorsement from Chris Whelan. Chris adopted Paris as his home town many years ago and he is one of the creative people who makes our community better: he is a musician, newspaper publisher (The Paris Independent), and a movie buff. He researches and writes great stories of our Town’s history for local publications so more people are aware of our heritage. He is also a craftsman who makes replica movie props such as Jumanji Boards that are so detailed that Sony Pictures buys them and uses them to promote their movies. Arts, Culture and Heritage are important to any community and Chris enriches Paris with all of his creative endeavours. Thank you Chris, for what you do and for this wonderful endorsement!
From Steve: Nadine Mackenzie offered to be on my Campaign Team, and will be helping to distribute my information in her neighbourhood over the next few weeks. Nadine’s Dad was Art Mackenzie who, in addition to being a great musician and singer, served as a Councillor for the Town of Paris and the County of Brant many years ago. Art passed away right before the last election. A couple of weeks before he died, he phoned me at home, wishing me luck in that election and offering me some valuable advice about being on Council. I always appreciated Art’s thoughtfulness, just as I now appreciate Nadine’s endorsement and help in this election. Thank you Nadine!
From Steve: Today’s Campaign Button sighting has a unique backstory: in 1975, I remember coming home from the local variety store with the first issue of the new Captain Canuck comic book. Twenty years after that, I took a night school art class at Mohawk College, taught by Richard Comely, who created that comic book. A few years after that, Richard was my sister in law’s neighbour in Cambridge and we reconnected and most recently, Richard and his wife Evelyn were one of the first to move into the Brookfield subdivision in Ward 2, Paris. Richard and Evelyn are great, community minded people (with a Little Free Library on their front lawn) and I’m fortunate to call them friends. They are also helping me with my campaign efforts over the next few weeks. Thank you Richard and Evelyn, I appreciate your endorsement and your friendship and I’m grateful that our paths keep intersecting! ❤️ #votehowes #captaincanuck #fanexpo #comicbooks #arts&culture #Ward2 #parisontario
From Steve: Spotted Brent Reeder at the Paris Fair wearing a Campaign Button on Labour Day weekend: Thank You Brent for your continued support! ❤️ #votehowes
Steve says: This Campaign Button sighting was a tall order, literally! Doug the Great IS a great, community-minded guy who brings a lot of fun to local events with his many characters. We both like magic, and years ago I suggested we could be a duo act: “Doug The Great & Steve Just Average”. It never took off- 🤣🤣 Thank you Doug, I value your friendship and appreciate your endorsement! 😊
From Steve: This Campaign Button sighting is a unique one as it is a ‘Mutual Endorsement’ between Mayor David Bailey and I, for re-election in October. I didn’t know David before we started working together and I have really enjoyed being on this Council journey with him: He has my vote on October 24th and I know I would have his if he lived in Ward 2! 🙂 #VoteHowes and #BAILEY4BRANT
