Steve Howes Candidate for Councillor Ward 2 County of Brant

Steve Howes Candidate for Councillor Ward 2 County of Brant

Endorsements

I am honoured to have the support of family, friends, colleagues, current and former residents, and local businesses in the County of Brant for my re-election campaign.

Please contact me if you would like to show your support for my campaign, or if you would like to have me come by to chat on your porch.

From Dr. Kathryn Carter, Professor of English, Wilfrid Laurier University, Resident of Ward 2:

I have known Steve Howes since Grade 10, and even then, he knew so much about Paris, its history, and its inhabitants! He was community-minded from a young age. Since then, I watched him develop a remarkable set of skills that set him apart as an exceptional county councillor. When I work with leaders in government and post-secondary institutions, I meet very few who share Steve’s skills for leadership, problem solving, and consultation! I have watched him handle the sometimes difficult and emotional situations that come up in local politics with real grace: he responds quickly when someone reaches out, he really listens, and then he is creative about how to solve problems that address differing concerns. Because he seems to know everyone, he relies on a wide network of citizens to make informed choices for our community. I like his practicality about what is affordable and what is possible to achieve. Aside from that, though, he is open and creative and eager to imagine where our ward and our county can go with some guidance and foresight. We are super lucky to have Steve Howes in our community corner.

From David Powell – Internationally Renowned Designer, Built Heritage Advocate, Resident of Paris:

As he quite recently reminded me, I have known Steve since he was a teenager when he first carried my groceries to my car. That was just typical of him: thoughtful, considerate and openly friendly. Since then I have observed him as he has grown in character and maturity, always exhibiting those same characteristics.
As a lifetime resident of Paris he brings a deep understanding and commitment to his role as County Councillor for Ward 2. During the time that he has served on Council I have witnessed his genuine concern for his community: its heritage, its residents, and its best interests moving forward. He has served with dedication and fairness. He possesses a clarity of vision and is often a voice of reason in times of serious debate.
Unfortunately I do not live in his Ward, but I can think of no one who I would rather have represent me at Council.

From Lukas Oakley – Councillor Ward 2 County of Brant:

While I may not be running in the next election, my Ward mate Steve Howes will be! Ward 2, and the County as a whole, is so fortunate to have his calm, reasoned leadership representing them. I consider myself so lucky to have sat next to Steve these past four years as a colleague and political mentor. I encourage all to support him in the upcoming election, you couldn’t ask for someone who cares more for this community to be at the helm.

Endorsements received for my previous Re-election Campaign (2022)

From Marc Laferriere, former Councillor Ward 2 County of Brant:

Steve Howes has been an exemplar councillor since being elected in 2018. I have watched him with grace and energy advocate for residents and fight for Brant effectively with other levels of government. He innately understands how to work with others, but he also understands how all of this works – and it is complicated and complex. Different levels or government, committees, finances, processes, and joint committees with various other larger municipalities can be a lot to learn and adapt to. Steve has done that work.

That knowledge will prove very helpful to whomever will be new to council and to the other Ward 2 seat if you choose to Vote Howes again on Oct 24th, 2022. He makes all of us on council better with his grounded positive attitude, vast historical community knowledge and his strong ethics. He will not tell you what you want to hear but will always tell you the truth. He will also ask your questions in public meetings and privately to get the answers needed to make good decisions. He cares deeply about the public and the public good. I have seen this countless times over the last 4 years. On a personal note, I have been thankful every single day of this past term that the voters of Ward 2 decided to put us to work together for them. In my opinion you could not ask for a better wardmate and ward councillor than Steve Howes. #VoteHowes

Note from Steve: No matter what happens in the rest of my political career, I will be forever grateful for the tremendous experience serving with you Marc. Thank you! 💙

From Avery Moore Kloss – Voice Artist, Storyteller & Journalist, Paris Resident:

I spent years not saying much about politics publicly. Old journalist habits die hard. But when it comes to local government I’m very vocal. So I’m more than happy to endorse my friend Steve Howes, Councillor Ward 2, Paris, County of Brant ahead of this municipal election. We even delivered door hangers as a family to help “Team Steve”. In Steve’s first four years as a Brant County councillor he’s really showed his dedication to leadership, to representation and to hearing all opinions from his constituents while making decisions that affect all of us. Steve is somehow able to weigh both the wishes of families who have lived here for generations (like his) and families who are new to the area. He hears everyone. I even sent my dad to him with some concerns he had, not realizing he didn’t live in Ward 2, and Steve showed up to listen and help anyway, even though it’s not his ward (oops!).I’m proud to call Steve a friend, and I’ll be even more proud to see him as a leader on council once again. You get two votes in ward 2 – and one of mine will be Steve Howes.

It’s more important than ever to vote in municipal elections. Use your vote and your voice, they’re powerful. 🗳

Note from Steve: Avery Moore Kloss is an amazing journalist/storyteller by profession, who goes to great lengths to research and prepare before delivering a final product for her audience.

The same dedication was applied recently as Avery and her husband tackled the task of creating Ward 2’s first Additional Residential Unit. I have also seen firsthand how Avery uses her passion and creativity to be a wonderful and inventive Mom….😊

Avery, I’m grateful that your family decided to call Paris home, (and that Marc introduced us 4 years ago!). I appreciate your wonderful endorsement and your help with my campaign—Thank you!

From Paul Cheney – Visual Artist, World Traveller, former Ward 2 resident:

I first met Steve Howes while he was campaigning to be a councillor for the ward I lived in, in Paris Ontario. Though I no longer live there I know a lot of you do. I envy you for having such a fantastic representative. Over the past four years, Steve has helped me personally with several issues. Not only has he taken the time to help with issues I faced while in Ward 2 he has become a great friend. Steve is not only the most attentive representative I have ever met, but he is also an advocate for the arts and a fantastic artist himself. If you are fortunate enough to live in one of the best areas of one of the best towns, you owe it to yourself to vote for Steve.

Additional Endorsements & Campaign Button Sightings from 2022 Re-election Campaign

From Allison Langille: We’re grateful to all who came out to support the girls for 1st Paris Scouts. Thank you especially to Steve Howes, Councillor Ward 2, Paris, County of Brant for stopping by. We’re big fans of Councillor Steve in our house - he has always been helpful and responsive to our concerns. We call the stop sign on our busy street “Edward‘s stop sign” because it got installed on his first birthday thank you to the work of Steve (and Marc Laferriere!) helping advocate for why this was so important to our family’s safety. From Steve: Thank you to cousin Angela Asadoorianfor stopping by Campaign Central today! What a robust conversation! From Jamie Sass: Finally got my “Vote Howes” button! While I am not a ward 2 guy, nor a big political person, I can say this: I can’t think of anyone that cares more about this town than Steve Howes does. We all can easily point fingers, blaming current council for the crazy growth etc, but the truth is, those seeds were planted long ago. A lot of those decisions happen way above the municipal authority as well. Steve’s passion to look after the town he has lived in all his life is unmatched. For this, he gets my full endorsement! 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 From Steve: This Campaign Button sighting came with breakfast at my “office” in Scott's Family Restaurant And Deli! Thanks Sassman for the great endorsement, and for breakfast! 😊
From Taylin Lee: My good friend and long time neighbour @steve.howes is running again this year in our Paris local election for town Council of ward 2. Vote Howes! 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 From Steve: Taylin Lee grew up just 5 doors away from our house in the Junction part of Ward 2 and I’ve known her Mom’s family my whole life. Over the last 20 years I have had the opportunity to see Taylin grow up to be a very successful young lady (and superstar Mom) with multiple businesses and a genuine natural instinct for helping others. Thank you Taylin…I really appreciate your endorsement! #VoteHowes
From Steve: I’ve known Matt Willson and his family since I was Matt’s Cub leader 40 years ago. Nobody works harder than Matt, as he juggles multiple careers including the family business, and acting, directing and producing in film, TV and stage productions. Watching Matt grow from an energetic little kid to a dedicated family man with his amazing wife Jax and delightful kids Thatcher and Becket has been wonderful. I’ve seen what his daily schedule looks like and I’m honoured that he took time recently to show his support for my re-election campaign. Thanks Matt! ❤️ #VoteHowes
From John Bell, candidate for re-election Councillor Ward 3 County of Brant: Our Councillor, and now candidate for Councillor, came by yesterday. Steve has done a great job in his first term of Council - he prepares well, researches well, and represents his Ward and the County with honesty and integrity. He will be one of my 2 votes for our ward Councillor. 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 From Steve: Ward 2 has many great residents including Ward 3 Councillor John Bell and his wonderful wife Audrey. I’ve known them for a long time and I have really appreciated serving on Council with John for the last 4 years. John takes a very thorough and thoughtful approach to representing the people of Ward 3 and I’m happy to endorse him in the upcoming election. I’m also grateful for the support and encouragement that John and Audrey have shown for my re-election…we had a great chat as I worked my way around their neighbourhood. (Thank you Audrey for the photo and the tea ! 😊 ) #votehowes
From Steve: Wishing a Happy 84th Birthday to my Dad today! I’m always happy to be able to celebrate my Dad’s big day and after some shingles related health issues a few months ago, I’m especially grateful that he has bounced back and is looking great! And, of course, Dad has always been one of my biggest supporters and he wears his Vote Howes button with pride as he cruises around Paris every day. Happy Birthday Dad, I love you and will see you soon! ❤️🎂
From Keely Powley (and her mom Shelley Dunstan): When we started to think about moving to Paris, we reached out to our good friend for advice. We wanted to know a little more about this pretty little town before we decided to make it our home. Steve Howes sent me the longest message with all of the reasons he loves Paris. His excitement and passion for the town made us fall in love with it before we had even officially bought our house. Steve loves this county and is dedicated to seeing it continue to grow to be inclusive and thriving for all who call it home. We are so proud of him for being on town council the last few years, and nothing would make us happier than to see him continue to use his enthusiasm for Paris for the good of all residents. Steve, we are honoured to wear your pins (traditionally and as Coraline) and support your campaign for another term on town council. We know with you in town hall, Paris is in the best possible hands.🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 From Steve: What a beautiful endorsement from friends who are new to Paris! Keely and her Mom Shelley Dunstan and the rest of their family are wonderful people and great additions to our Town and I’m honoured to receive their support. Thank you both for this Campaign Button sighting and for your kind words! 😊 #votehowes
From Susan Serre and Deb Loyd: 🗳 Voting Time is approaching... Delivering door knockers for the Municipal election coming up! Vote Steve Howes for Ward 2 🙌 (he’s a good guy 😃) 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 From Steve: These are two dynamic members of my campaign team: Sue is well known in town for her many years ownership of the Hollow Willow Health store. Deb is fairly new to Paris, and she is a performer and creator of stories for kids. Individually, each of these ladies have terrific positive energy and together they are incredible. They have been out and about in parts of Ward 2, delivering information that introduces people to my new campaign website. Thank you Sue and Deb for your help and for your endorsement! ❤️
From Steve: Todays Campaign Button sighting is EDIBLE, thanks to the artistic talents of local baker extraordinaire Shelby Stone! 😊 I’ve known Shelby her whole life and have watched her evolve from a kid contributing to the North Ward School Cookbook 25 years ago to a young entrepreneur Mom operating a thriving business - Sugar & Spice Bakery - out of her home. Shelby was a spokesperson for the At-Home Business community at a Council meeting this term and helped inspire the County of Brant to create new ByLaws to help Home Based Businesses. Thank you for your support of my campaign Shelby…these are too good to eat…ALMOST. (They were delicious too!)❤️ #votehowes 🍪
From Steve: This Campaign Button sighting is with our longtime friends Chris and Erin Adams. Chris grew up in Paris and was part of the local garage band scene in high school, (see inset b & w photo) ending up on the Q107 Home Grown album with his band Tumbling Dice. I met Erin back in the late 80’s at the former Darby’s Fitness Club. I introduced the two of them, and they ended up getting married and raising 3 wonderful daughters in Brantford. With their recent move back to Paris (Ward 2 of course,😉) I appreciate their support and their votes in the upcoming election! 😊#flashbackfriday #votehowes #welcomeback
From Steve: Today’s Campaign Button sighting came with a free sample of THE BEST local tomatoes! Jason Cooper and I have known each other since high school and nestled in the beautiful scenery of Blue Lake Road, Coop has a wonderful produce stand…definitely worth checking out. Thanks for your support Coop and tonight will be Bruschetta Night at our house! 😊 🍅
From Steve: This Campaign Button sighting is a special one at Browndale Farm. Obviously the cows can’t vote for me, since they are in Ward 1 😉 😁, however I do appreciate their encouragement! Agriculture Business has always been a vital part of our community and Browndale Farm is a great example. I love how they open their giant barn to teach kids about their automated dairy production system and their on site shop has the BEST beef we have ever tasted. Thank you to my friend Ashley for your support and for helping me get this picture! ❤️ #lovelocalbrant #votehowes #agribusiness
Kari Raymer Bishop, an outstanding member of our community (see below) says: I was out canvassing for my friend Steve Howes tonight. A new neighbour asked if he was any good. I told her that I happily endorsed him last time (even though he wasn't a lesbian woman of colour in a wheelchair 🤣) and that he has been such a great councillor that this time, that I am willingly trudging about the neighbourhood with my kid and my husband and my dog to drop off campaign materials and to remind people how well he has served us over the past four years. Steve Howes is wonderful. He knows Paris, he works well with others, he serves with diligence and dedication and he listens to his constituents. STEVE SHOWS UP. He is smart and compassionate and honest. I'm so glad he has been our councillor for Ward 2 Paris, and I am grateful that he is willing to run again. A lot of politicians have disappointed me. This guy just gets better and better 🙂 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 Steve says: Kari Raymer Bishop is an accomplished educator, writer and content coordinator for the local Paris On The Grand magazine in addition to being a world traveller, exceptional Mom and all around dynamo who is VERY attentive and active in our community. Thank you Kari, for joining my campaign team. I am very honoured to share this endorsement. I may even frame this one ❤️

Thank you all for your support! ❤️ #votehowes
From Steve: Nadine Mackenzie offered to be on my Campaign Team, and will be helping to distribute my information in her neighbourhood over the next few weeks. Nadine’s Dad was Art Mackenzie who, in addition to being a great musician and singer, served as a Councillor for the Town of Paris and the County of Brant many years ago. Art passed away right before the last election. A couple of weeks before he died, he phoned me at home, wishing me luck in that election and offering me some valuable advice about being on Council. I always appreciated Art’s thoughtfulness, just as I now appreciate Nadine’s endorsement and help in this election. Thank you Nadine!

He's kept me proud of my home town and I hope he continues to serve the people of Ward 2 in Brant for another four years! 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 🟦 Steve says: Jonathan and I went to high school together and he went off to find success in a wide range of fascinating careers. We share some passions including vintage Ray Ban Wayfarers and Dr Johnny Fever T shirts, and his shop in Toronto is a great source for vintage treasures and general sartorial excellence. Jonathan I appreciate your endorsement and your kind words! 😎 #votehowes
From Sam Lee: Steve Howes is running for re-election in the upcoming municipal election. Not only has he given me this super cool button, but he has also listened to my concerns, come out to my property to get a complete visual of said concerns, and educate himself about the issue from both sides of the story. He is a strong champion of our small local businesses, and has voted to support what I feel is important to our community. Visit VoteHowes.ca to get to know Steve. I'm sure once you meet him you will want to ensure he is reelected. #parisontario #countyofbrant #ward2 #dontforgettovote
From Steve: Today’s Campaign Button sighting has a unique backstory: in 1975, I remember coming home from the local variety store with the first issue of the new Captain Canuck comic book. Twenty years after that, I took a night school art class at Mohawk College, taught by Richard Comely, who created that comic book. A few years after that, Richard was my sister in law’s neighbour in Cambridge and we reconnected and most recently, Richard and his wife Evelyn were one of the first to move into the Brookfield subdivision in Ward 2, Paris. Richard and Evelyn are great, community minded people (with a Little Free Library on their front lawn) and I’m fortunate to call them friends. They are also helping me with my campaign efforts over the next few weeks. Thank you Richard and Evelyn, I appreciate your endorsement and your friendship and I’m grateful that our paths keep intersecting! ❤️ #votehowes #captaincanuck #fanexpo #comicbooks #arts&culture #Ward2 #parisontario
